Retirement timing · Worked example
Retire at 50.
Or work until 53?
Three years can change the financial picture. They also cost three years of your time. Here is a concrete way to examine that trade-off.
This example follows a fictional 45-year-old who has built ₹2.1 crore of retirement savings. They want to spend ₹10 lakh a year after retiring, in today’s purchasing power. They can keep adding ₹12 lakh a year while working.
The question is not “Which age does the calculator recommend?” It is “How much does the financial result change, and what risks remain?”
The six starting figures
- Current age
- 45
- First retirement age
- 50
- Plan lasts to age
- 95
- Retirement savings today
- ₹2.1 crore
- Added each working year
- ₹12 lakh
- Spent each retirement year
- ₹10 lakh
No pension or rental income is assumed. The model uses the middle-return example: nominal returns of 12% while working and 10% in retirement, annual volatility of 18% and 15%, 5% inflation, and 0.8% annual fee/tax drag. These are illustrative assumptions—not expected market performance or a tax calculation.
Reproduce it: open the Retirement Timing Lab and choose “Restore worked example.” The figures here use 2,000 paths, seed 2026, no increase in real yearly saving, and a −60% nominal return floor. The model also caps annual sampled returns at 125% before drag.
What three more working years change
| Retire at | Median savings at retirement | Paths lasting to 95 |
|---|---|---|
| 50 | ₹3.30 Cr | 1,327 / 2,000 (66%) |
| 51 | ₹3.61 Cr | 1,421 / 2,000 (71%) |
| 53 | ₹4.13 Cr | 1,589 / 2,000 (79%) |
| 55 | ₹4.77 Cr | 1,709 / 2,000 (85%) |
All savings amounts are in today’s money. “Median” means the middle outcome, not a promised amount. Percentages are rounded to whole numbers; counts show the exact number of paths.
At 53, the median retirement pot is about ₹83 lakh larger than at 50 in these tests. There are three more years of contributions and investment exposure, and three fewer retirement years to fund. Those advantages do not mean every possible market path improves.
The check that changes the conversation
A comfortable-looking headline can hide a fragile plan. The tool also runs two separate difficult scenarios:
| Scenario | Retire at 50 | Retire at 53 |
|---|---|---|
| First two retirement years return −25%, then −10% | 562 / 2,000 (28%) | 936 / 2,000 (47%) |
| Inflation stays at 7%, instead of 5% | 724 / 2,000 (36%) | 1,037 / 2,000 (52%) |
The crash replaces the first two nominal retirement returns before the fee/tax drag. Higher inflation applies throughout the working and retirement years. The shocks are tested separately, not together.
The useful finding: working to 53 improves this example, but the early-crash result is still below half of the tested paths. “Better than 50” is not the same as “safe to retire.”
Make it your decision
Replace the example with your figures. Include recurring costs in annual spending, and use savings available for retirement—not the value of a home you do not intend to sell. If substantial one-off costs or multiple income streams matter, the FIRE Planner allows those to be entered separately.
Then change one thing at a time: retirement spending, the amount saved while working, or the market assumptions. Look at the difficult-market results as well as the larger pot. The tool cannot value your health, family time, or satisfaction at work.
If you want time away from work rather than permanent retirement, the Career Break Planner answers the shorter-term cash question instead.
What this example cannot establish
This is not a backtest, a personalised probability, or evidence that a particular retirement date is suitable. The simulation uses a simplified, clipped normal-return model. It cannot represent every market, healthcare event, tax rule, or family obligation. Saving and spending occur at year-end in the model. A different seed, return model, or input set can change the result.
